The Challenge
A Recipe App - You are selected by a company that has an app for collecting recipes of world cuisines. The app hasn't been updated in a while, so you're being asked to add four useful features that will make it more marketable. You can also rebrand it with a cool name. These are the characteristics that must be included:
-
Make the app design drool-worthy so that anyone who sees the recipes is tempted to try them.
-
Create the app in such a way that it is optimized for someone cooking while watching recipe videos.
-
When a user clicks a pic of a fruit, vegetable, or another item, it displays its name and shows nearby retailers and/or e-commerce services that sell/deliver the required ingredients on time.
-
Time - 7 days

How might we
How might we
Keeping in mind the limited time to come up with a solution, I interviewed few people around me to understand the likes and dislikes of using a recipe app. Next, I came up with “how might we” statements

Competitive Analysis
Competitive Analysis

Lack of Personalisation: Many recipe apps offer a universal method of cooking, which might not be ideal for individuals with particular dietary needs or taste preferences.
-
Difficulty Finding Recipes: Finding the ideal recipe for a user's requirements or tastes might be challenging given the abundance of recipes available.
-
Poor User Experience: Users may get dissatisfied and look for alternatives if recipe apps are irritating to use, take a long time to load, or have a complex layout.
-
Limited Cooking Skills: People might not be well-versed in a large range of ingredients or intricate cooking methods, and they might just have basic cooking skills.
-
Limited Time: People frequently lead hectic lives and do not have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen.
-
Pet Recipes are nowhere: People care for their pet’s health and want to feed them home cooked food but there are almost no platform that have curated pet recipes.

Persona
Persona
During my research and interviews, I discovered that newlyweds and singles rely heavily on online recipes and encounter several difficulties when learning to cook.

Scenario
Scenario
Saira is a working woman who just got married. She resides with her husband, in-laws, and two dogs while working from home. She has some basic cooking skills because she lived as a paying guest for many years. Her in-laws want to live a waste-free lifestyle and frequently try to use the ingredients still in the house before purchasing new stock.
She is attentive to minute directions like time and flame that she finds difficult to follow as well as any other suggestions to make cooking simpler because she wants to improve her cooking abilities. She also wants to take care of the pets' daily menu, but because she has never cooked for animals before, she has to spend a lot of time seeking out pet-specific recipes.
She sometimes has trouble finding the same ingredients listed in the recipe online and has trouble comprehending the ingredients and directions in English because she is not fluent in the language.

Problem
Solution
Currently there are no apps available that offer a curated selection of pet recipes to choose from.
Through my research, I discovered that some pet owners hold a platform in lower regard if it does not cater to their pets, which they consider to be a part of their family. Conversely, there are individuals who prefer to avoid animals altogether, whether on a platform or elsewhere. This is where personalisation becomes crucial in order to cater to individuals with varying mindsets.

Problem
Leftover ingredients often go to waste, or in situations where users are in a rush and lack the precise ingredients specified in the recipe, they may forego cooking altogether.
Solution
The platform has integrated a unique feature into the homescreen, enabling users to select their preferred ingredients and receive recipe suggestions based on their selections.
Recipe by ingredients
Users have the option to either choose ingredients from the suggested list or manually add their preferred ingredients.
Add preferred ingredient
If necessary, users can either manually enter the name of an ingredient or even capture an image to add it to their list.

Problem
While cooking and following recipes, beginners tend to prefer precise instructions rather than relying on intuition. Users often want to keep track of specific details, such as the exact boiling time for eggs.
Solution
To assist users in following the cooking process step-by-step, a timer feature has been incorporated wherever necessary.

Timer
The platform offers a convenient timer feature that allows users to ensure precise cooking times for optimal results.
Problem
Solution
Occasionally, users may require alternative ingredients due to unavailability or lack of access to certain spices or ingredients.

Alternative ingredients
The platform provides users with options to substitute the main ingredient with few alternatives. Users can select the preferred option and replace it in the recipe. The substitution will be reflected throughout the recipe for that user, including the ingredients list and steps.
